If you’re looking at midsize SUVs, you have countless choices. The 2026 Subaru Outback and 2026 Mazda CX-50 are both terrific options. Let’s examine the specs of both to determine how they stack up.
The Outback comes in six available trims, ranging from the affordable Premium model to the pricier Touring XT. The CX-50 comes in seven trim levels, from the entry-level 2.5 S Select to the fully-equipped 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus model. We’ll find most of what these vehicles have to offer without too many upgrades from the base trim level, so let’s look at the standard features of the 2026 Subaru Outback Premium vs. the 2026 Mazda CX-50 2.5 S Select.
Vehicle Details
The CX-50 packs a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine under the hood for 185 lb-ft torque @ 4,000 rpm and 2,000 lb towing capacity. For the drivetrain, we have AWD with sport and off-road intelligent drive modes and 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. With an estimated 24 MPG city / 30 MPG highway, the CX-50 is a respectable option when it comes to fuel efficiency.
On the whole, both the Outback and CX-50 are competent performers in most settings.
The Mazda CX-50 also delivers when considering safety. The CX-50 comes with a driver assist package that includes lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, head-on collision mitigation, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go.
We have no major complaints about the CX-50’s interior. With a 6-way manual adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control and 56.3 cubic feet of cargo volume with the back seats down, comfort shouldn’t be an issue. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integrations, 8-speaker audio system and more make for a serviceable infotainment setup.
Subaru is acclaimed for making extremely capable, safe, and reliable vehicles at a reasonable price point. The 2026 Subaru Outback upholds the reputation. The 2026 Mazda CX-50 is also a great choice. Both are excellent, but in our opinion, the Subaru Outback pulls out ahead.
